When I start a book that I know has won a prize, I probably expect too much from it, and then I'm often let down. I tried so very hard to like it, I really did.

I found the whole thing just a little too contrived - it tried a little too hard. The prose was irritating. I didn't like not having chapters, as there was no natural break for putting the book down - something you don't notice when you're liking the book!

What I did like was the way Paddy tried to reach out to his brother (and friends) - and then reverted to doing the things he knew he'd get a reaction from when he wasn't successful. The mismatch between sensitive inner dialogue and physical action.

By the end however, I just wanted it to be over. I was longing for one parent to leave the other just so that the book would end, and then when it did, I was left thinking 'Is that it?'
