I read this book on the recommendation of The King's English, where it was classified as a "thriller with moral heft." Moral heft it has in spades, and there are some thrills, too, though the thrills are "quieter." This is not a novel of first fights, but rather the tension builds like a Hitchcock movie. At time the action moved slowly and I occasionally felt bogged down in Le Carre's prose (which is great, by the way), but overall I enjoyed trying to put the (very confusing) pieces together and the very human side of spying.
