It's very much a "Da Vinci Code" type thriller, albeit better written, but I still couldn't get too invested in the characters or the plot. I really like my books, the ones that have historical and/or mythological/supernatural backdrops, to utilize that information in a new or intriguing fashion, and although there are hints of Russian folklore throughout, it was never really more than just a plot device. I don't regret reading it, and I wouldn't pooh-pooh someone else giving it a shot, but I wasn't that impressed. (And it says Philip Carter is a pseudonym for "an internationally best-selling author" so that's interesting...either Nora Roberts is at it again or we have a case of Alan Smithee at work.)
