really liked it
bookshelves: non-fiction

A very interesting memoir of an East European Jewish immigrant. The experiences the author shared added to my appreciation for those who immigrated to America and increased my understanding of the challenges they faced. I have to admit that I was particularly interested in reading this because 3 of 4 of my dad's grandparents were Russian Jews who immigrated to America about the same time as the author; two of my great-grandparents were from Polotsk (in what is now Belarus), the village that the author lived in. Since my great-grandparents did not speak of their lives in Russia, I felt that this book gave me tremendous insight into the history of my own family.
