it was amazing

Recommended for: those who like Stieg Larsson or crime around the world

Who would think that a Norwegian writer/musician/songwriter/economist would write decent crime fiction, to put him in the same category for skills (and quite a bit for style) as Stieg Larsson? A surprisingly good find. Apparently Nesbø's books haven't been translated in English in order; this one was the third book, but the first to be translated. And this is part of Oslo trilogy: The Redbreast, Nemesis, Devil's Star.

The hero, good cop, Harry Hole, shoots a secret service guy by mistake on duty, and the Norwegian police try to cover their mistake by upgrading Hole to a different, better paid section, of the force. While Harry ends up investigating the Norwegian neo-nazi activities, he ends up drawn in a mystery of which the roots go back all the way to the second world war and Norway's dark past. Something happened to the Norwegians on the Eastern front and the SS teams. Now, over 50 years later, someone starts to kill the old men who were there, one by one. And now Harry, an angry, drinking, not always right but so humane policeman has to find the key to the mysteries before the worst possible happens. (Of course there are a few loose end, after all, it's part of a trilogy).

Nesbø manages to write even including the topics above without making it be as heavy as most novels about WWII. Fresh. The writing style is enjoyable and entertaining, and you get to know the characters as they are introduced. And the chapters are short enough so it doesn't feel too big (but it's 520 pages in total. However everything fits, so I wouldn't shorten any part). I will definitely look forward to other books by him.

Maybe the mention of Nesbø as a writer/musician/songwriter/economist kept me from starting the book earlier. Just introduce him as a writer on the cover, and add a link somewhere inside to find out more about him. And now, I'll need to hunt for Nemesis...
