I think Burnett was better at doing the kind of intersection of everyday and fairytale that she achieved in The Secret Garden, A Little Princess, and The Making of a Marchioness. I don't think realism with more than a touch of melodrama was entirely her forte, well-written though The Shuttle is and with a splendid example of a competent and empowered heroine.
