it was amazing

Zadie Smith's White Teeth was one of the books that got me started as a writer. Her humor and her immersion into place and character had me hooked. I have read all her books. Swing Time is glorious for me in that it submerged me into the childhood of two London girls while simultaneously driving the story forward through their adult lives. At one point, in an African village scene, I stopped reading to wonder at how Zadie Smith's writing could feel so leisurely and effortless and yet have taken me so far from the grimy streets of London. I came away marvelling at how she laid bare the ways in which we are all addicted to judging other people lives without really understanding them.
