My biggest takeaway when I read Gilgamesh was how universal, even somehow modern, most of its themes were. Pair this with the fact that it's among the oldest - if not the oldest - extant work of written fiction, and, well, that says something about what it means to be human. It also says something about where the Old Testament got a lot of its ideas...
