English:
Magnus Engström made his debut in 2011 with the graphic novel Luftspår (Air Track), an experimental detective story with existential dimensions. Skuggfärd (Shadow Road) is a kind of sequel, in the sense that it once again contains a detective/thriller story used as a tool to discuss other issues, in this case, what happens after death.

The story follows a young woman in the near future, whose boyfriend disappears inexplicably. In her sleep, she writes messages to herself that slowly leads her to an abandoned cabin where it turns out that the boyfriend had ended up in the midst of a fight between dead souls who are guarding their secrets against the living. The images are drawn in black and white with ink washes and so realistic that the artist very well could have used photos as the start of the drawing process.

Skuggfärd is a more traditional comic compared to Luftspår, and the story is compelling as a well-made movie, or perhaps an episode of a television series as this largely wordless graphic novel is fairly quick read. Skuggfärd is well made and good looking, but unfortunately I never really felt connected to the experiences of the main protagonist.
