Wonderfully different characters are totally engaging, even in their strangeness. Once again, Patchett makes the setting a vital part of this story about science, medicine, and some people who are involved in the pharmaceutical industry as they work on a drug from deep within the Amazon forest. There are many twists and turns in the plot, leaving the reader on the edge of his or her seat. There is great fodder for discussion; this is one of those stories that will keep popping up in your mind for a long time.
