I read this during my John Irving days in Boston (Chelmsford, methinks). This was circa 1990. I think I had seen the movie, or parts of it anyhow, prior to reading the book. I expected oddities and was not disappointed. This is not my favorite Irving novel. The scenes in Vienna were less successful for me.

I do recall connecting with the wisdom of "keep passing the open windows". I still use it all these years later. That indicates the book, while the plot may be hazy to me these days, still provides an impact.
