It is the weakest of the four Lecter novels, though it's not a horrible book. It seems like, considering that Harris takes 7+ years to publish his novels, that this one seemed the most rushed. It was as if he wrote this in six months, and his editors decided to just set it to print, rather than actually take the time to question and make him delve deeper into a story that I think is actually quite worth telling. The story of how an Eastern European boy is turned into a monster by the horrific circumstances of WWII. The middle section of the book is really well written, but the very beginning is muddled and the end is rushed and too obviously written as a screenplay, not as a novel. I do have to say though, I didn't put it down, and I was glad I read it.
