Alison's Reviews > The Vegetarian
This was weird and engrossing. The main character, Yeong-hye, stops eating meat after having a dream, a fact that her family cannot understand or reconcile themselves to. This is in part because she withdraws from them, and in part because she slowly stops eating entirely (and, in part, because they just don't get it). Many passages in this novel are hard to read, and the characters are sometimes brutal. Told from three perspectives - her husband, brother in law, and older sister - we see all the ways in which everyone else wants to control Yeong-hye, and her vegetarianism (which turns into something else) is the one way she can take charge of her life.
