really liked it
bookshelves: adult-fiction, fantasy

Complex, gritty fantasy about the political machinations of powerful families. Martin's imaginary, medieval world is populated by an immense host of characters ranging from completely self serving and diabolical, to those who are so naive that their good intentions kill people on accident, and everything in between. Martin isn't afraid to kill characters horribly and ruthlessly, or to describe incest, child marriage, and a number of other unpleasant things, so be prepared. But the story is engrossing, and all the characters flawed and fascinating. It's like reading the gossip pages on Olympus.
