This book was just alright for me. I think part of the problem was that I wasn't particularly interested in this series to begin with. I really want to read the Insider Series and Touch of Power, but I just felt like I had to read her series in order for some reason...I'm weird that way!

I felt the same disconnect with this book that I did with Magic Study, but even more so. Opal was decent as a heroine, I guess. She is definitely more unsure of herself than Yelena ever was. For some reason, I can't quite pinpoint why, but I never really cared about Opal or her struggles as much as I did for Yelena.

Maria V. Snyder seems to really like torturing her heroines. I hope her other books are toned down in that aspect...I guess that's what makes it hard for me to get so invested in those issues- I've come to expect them as a matter of course after reading her other books!
