it was amazing
bookshelves: desert-island-good, fiction, romance, worthy-of-reread

I hesitated to file this under my "romance" self, because in many ways this is almost an anti-romance book, but... It's just such a wonderful love story! Despite the fact that all declarations of love are waved over with description rather than actual dialog (unless, of course, they're ridiculous -- then Austen records it in delightful detail), and despite the fact Austen never allows love's eye to cloud her omniscient narrator (the character may be clouded, the narrator never is -- and will call the character on said clouding, for that matter). In fact, I think what makes it so wonderful and so timeless is that Austen refused to write this as a romance. And I will love her (and her story) forever for it.

(FYI, I made a few posts in my livejournal while reading, if you wanted to follow along.)
