Ashley's abuse is revealed in pieces throughout the text so it's not too hard to take. The desire to cling to her mother resonates with me as I think it will with many teen girls. She finds love and support with her father and step-mother, a nice contradiction to the culture in which we live. The story is broken into different scenes because she separates the past and present. This might pose some difficulty for reluctant readers.
