Ada's Violin: The Story of the Recycled Orchestra of Paraguay

2016 Eureka Gold Award winner. So much potential for student-led conversations and writing in response to higher-level thinking questions like, "What is the role of 'garbage' (things that are no longer useful or wanted and that have been thrown out) in this story?" or "How does the quote from the orchestra's teacher, Favio Chavez--'The world sends us garbage. We send back music.'--serve as a theme for the story?" or "How do the members of the community including the children in the orchestra demonstrate perseverance (in the face of adversity)?" or "How does the author develop the setting in this book?
This could easily be paired with other "texts" (video clips, etc.) including those referenced at the end of the book in the Author's Note. It would be interesting to compare firsthand accounts (interviews with members of the orchestra) with the story as a secondhand account.
