This text is drawn from the Hoffman original, so it is a bit simpler than the ballet with which more of us today are familiar. Marie doesn't turn into a grown woman, there is only the slightest hint of romance, and the godfather is a kindly background figure rather than a threat.

Yana Sedova's illustrations were very pretty, although a bit heavy on the clockwork motif, which drops out of the story after the first few pages. Perhaps some kindly librarian could add her as the illustrator, as well as shoving the word "the" in front of "Mouse King" (which ought be two words).

Abigail Sedova also did a Snow Queen that is quite beautiful. Question for you: why is this picture-book adaptation combined with the full-text version? Should I ask in the Librarians' Group about it?

message 2: by Chris (new)

Chris Chapman Not only that, some overly zealous « merger » has combined other picture book adaptations (Maurice Sendak’s and others) and the alternative textual adaptation by Alexandre Dumas père.
