The book starts off by introducing us to a flawed main character with a mysterious past, who must revisit his hometown. Given the set-up, and what seemed like a crime mystery type plot, the story was very compelling at first, but in the end just another disappointment. The story mutates into a vague ghost story about a town populated with crappy, judgmental hypocrites. Based on what I can remember (it's been a while since I read this), we don't ever get any concrete answers, and the main character doesn't go anywhere--The guy just self-destructs, but not in an interesting way. It's obvious this author can write very well, but I just wasn't happy with the direction of the story.
