This book lays out really important and shockingly unknown history--the history of black people in England before slavery was abolished. And because of that, it gets three stars because writing about this history is important and the book was full of good research that I can definitely use for a story that's brewing.

But in actuality, I don't know if it was necessarily well-written; a lot of the book seemed summarized and the focus was not simply on Black London, but on Black Britain. I skipped long sections on the Somerset case and other court cases about slavery because I wanted more personal, less big-picture stories about ordinary black Londoners, which I know is hard to come by in the historical record.

Also--I feel like the formatting in the ebook edition could have been better.
