I originally picked this book up because I had heard an interview with he Cohen Brothers. They explained that The Big Lebowski was based on the plot structure of Raymond Chandler type novel, but with The Dude as the lead character. This Chandler book, his first, has a plot that seens to closely resemble The Big Lebowski, at least from the back cover of the book. Chandler's General Sternwood resembles the elder Jeffrey Lebowski is character description. Sternwood is being bribed by someone because of the relationships of his sexually adventurous and dangerous daughter. He has hired Philip Marlowe to help shake the case. With many twists and turns, the rest of the Sternwood family gets involved. Marlowe does resolve everything in the end. While he is a very different man from The Dude, his rambling style to get to the bottom of the case is somewhat similar. While The Big Lebowski got me to read this novel, both are very strong pieces on their own.
