really liked it

What a fast paced, page turning, eerie, creepy psychological thriller! All the things I like in a book!

As the title hints, Grace and Jack are the perfect couple. Or so it seems. What really likes behind closed doors? Is their marriage really that great? There's no way anyone is that perfect! Well of course there is something wrong. Despite the very basic storyline, the author somehow kept you wanting more. Switching from the 'present' to the 'past' we see how Jack and Grace met, fell "in love", and how the truth about Jack is revealed. The switching of tenses left space for suspense and page turning. There's always action coming and going, which keeps it easy to read. The tone is very dark- almost 'stepford wife-y'. You know something is wrong, but you don't know what- and you want to find out everything about it.

So why not 5 stars? The middle "half" of this book is basically abuse porn. It's reading about an abusive situation. Why it's happening, how it came to be, and what other tortuous ways one can be abused, and abuse others via manipulation and using people. I don't find these topics unreadable or triggering, but I imagine some would find it gruesome. I'm one of those weird (horrible?!) people that find that stuff (in fiction) fascinating. But really- it got a little monotonous and tiring. The one dimensional villain also left room for improvement. We get it-he's evil. But he has NO DEPTH. The author tried to create a backstory for him to explain his actions, but it's all just blabbered out in two paragraphs then goes back to abuse porn.

Without spoilers, I enjoyed Grace's sister- Millie. She was a fun character to lighten (sort of) the mood, and gave readers something to look forward to. Also, without spoilers, I enjoyed the ending. Quite a few twists at the end there.
