I decided to read Gathering Blue after having read The Giver and I think I may actually like this book better! The stories are quite similar since both are set in futuristic utopian societies, but the society in Gathering Blue is also somewhat more primitive. The lead character is a female named Kira and I thought her story was very interesting because she has a special gift that allows her to live int he society despite being physically disabled. The only part that didn't live up to my expectations was the ending -- I felt like it was rushed and somewhat inconclusive. But I suppose that is Lowry's style.
