I'm torn as to whether to give three or four stars to this anthology of erotic short fiction, all related to travel and featuring persons of color. Of the dozen-odd stories, a few were truly outstanding, with the bulk divided between "nice enough" and "eh".

As one would expect, the fic's mostly het, with one MMF threesome (Preston L. Allen's "Southernmost Triangle") and one holy-fuck-hot queer threesome (Nalo Hopkinson's "Blackberries") that's going to make me seek out everything Hopkinson has ever written in ever. Yespleasethanks.

But aside from a few standouts, Wanderlust suffers from the perennial problem of the erotic anthology: the underlying quality of the writing. When there's a limited amount of submissions from a limited pool of writers, subject and theme are more important than the quality of the writing; because of the stigma associated with the genre, those willing to produce and market smut aren't always the best writers.

And that's a shame for those truly excellent pornographers out there -- and in this anthology.
