really liked it
bookshelves: picturebooks, read-aloud

Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed by Eileen Christelow is the first in her Five Little Monkeys series. This matches the classic rhyme with a very silly picturebook about mischevious monkeys that just don't learn! Perhaps the most popular and beloved picture book about head injuries ever!

This is great silly fun. The story shows the monkeys taking a bath, putting on their PJs, brushing their teeth, saying good night to Mama, ... then jumping on their bed a bit too wildly. Emphasize to children that this is a silly book and that Mama feels like being silly too at the end of the story.

The color pencil illustrations work perfectly for this story, and the monkeys are very cute. The faces of the little monkeys show lots of expression. The illustrations will allow preschoolers to tell the story themselves.

The rhyme and repetition for this predictable book and the use of the popular rhyme make this a good choice for beginning and transitional readers. Early literacy skills encouraged by this story include
narrative skills, phonological awareness, and print motivation.

Most of all, this is just a funny, entertaining story that children will love. Good for read-aloud and use along with the classic rhyme. I used fingerpuppets when I do the rhyme/song, giving kids a chance to hold a finger puppet monkey as they fall off the bed. Very popular! (Just be sure that everyone gets a turn!)

For ages 3 to 6, counting, countdown, math, bedtime, monkey themes, and fans of the Five Little Monkeys series and Eileen Christelow.
