Color me impressed by Lois Lowry's versatility. Having read The Giver and Number the Stars, I would never have guessed she was capable of such sarcastic humor. The dark and silly characters and self-referential commentary reminded me a little of Lemony Snicket.

But while it could be quite funny, overall I found it fell a little flat. She isn't doing anything new or interesting with the novel, and I actually got a little bored about halfway through. Additionally, a lot of the humor hinges on a familiarity with classic children's literature, which I'm not sure all kids would pick up on.
