really liked it
bookshelves: horror, books-boys-would-enjoy

Still debating between a 3.5 and a 4...
This book has real monsters...nothing sparkles, glitters, or falls in love with a teenage girl...These monsters rip you to shreds...literally...

1. The writing in this book is wonderful, fitting the time period, full of detail and emotion. The downside is that the great writing makes the horrific gory parts even more "icky."

2. I wasn't completely sure if I would like this book for a while at the beginning, but I have decided that books that make me think about them, and maybe even squirm a little, are often the ones that are the most well written. Will Henry and the Doctor have a pretty dysfunctional relationship, not a lot of affection, even some neglect, but this only goes to serve the storyline and develop the characters. I think John Kearns was the most intriguing, yet totally psychotic, character in the book.

3. I loved the imperfect be honest, none are completely likable, but that seems to add to the story.

4. There are some slow moving sections, and I have to admit my interest waned in a few parts...again mostly in the beginning.

5. I loved the twists and turns in the last third of the book...I had a couple of "ahas" and gasps...

6. I have seen a lot of reviews saying this is a middle grade level book...I think this is DEFINITELY NOT a book for younger readers. Frankly, parts of it are just too gross...I would not want my kids to read this until at least high school. Plus I don't think the writing would hold the attention of younger readers.

I am not sure how I feel about this as a series, but as a stand alone novel it worked just fine.

So far...really scary monsters, great narrative, complex characters...maybe just a little too much "eeew" factor...can't wait to see where this goes...

I got this one because of Maggie Stiefvater's review of it, so if you're intrigued, check it out...

More to come...
