it was amazing
Read in September, 2013

Reading books is so inherently subjective. Books I have loved fall flat for my friends; ones they enjoy strike sometimes strike no chord in me. Sometimes it has everything to do with what is going on my life when I'm reading, or even what type of mood I'm in. When I write reviews, I try to keep that subjectivity first and foremost in my mind, explaining what about the book struck me in such a particular way as best I can.

This is heightened when writing about books that are, in many ways formative. And so, with that in mind, sit down a while and let me tell you about The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe and me. This isn't a book that I can possibly separate from how much I loved it when I was young, and that, while I have grown, continues to be a very favourite.

Manny You had me at "shared my double bed with books".

Kim Same here. I've generally not shared my bed with more than one book at a time, but for as long as I can remember there've been piles of books on the bedroom floor!

I love your review, Megan. The impact of early experiences with books cannot be underestimated. Unlike you, I didn't like this book at all when I was a kid. It scared me senseless when I was ten and gave me an aversion to fantasy that I've only recently overcome. That said, my husband persuaded me to read the Narnia series about twenty five years ago and I enjoyed it very much, aversion to fantasy notwithstanding. He was the one who read All of the Narnia books aloud to our kids though!

Madeleine And this book made it seem that there might be magic around any corner, and for that, I can forgive it almost anything.

Is there any greater service a book can offer its reader?

I loved this review. I've never finished the Narnia Chronicles, which I sadly didn't get my hands on 'til I was an adult, but your love for the series' first book makes me want to give it another shot.

Also?

Those may have been the only seven consecutive weeks my room was clean in my entire life.

This made me actually laugh out loud. I know that dance all too well. Bookish bribery was a frequent motivator for Child Me.

Megan Baxter It's much more comfortable now to share the bed with a husband - he has less pointy corners!

Mostly my parents didn't care if my room was messy, as long as there weren't dirty dishes in there - but they certainly seized this opportunity!

Cheryl Great review!

Cheryl I planned on reading the entire series this summer, by the way. It didn't happen so maybe Winter...

LindaJ^ I did not read this book (and then the series) until I was an adult, but I loved it. A few years later, I read it to a group of kids aged 6-9 over a few weeks. They loved it and asked for more. The series is timeless.
