I have to say that l didn’t expect this book to be about abuse as it’s not the kind of memoir I would normally read. But what a story! What a woman! What a survivor! Kathryn Brettell writes about her childhood and the abuse she suffered at the hands of her stepfather in a very matter of fact tone. How her mother could have allowed this cruelty to go on almost defies belief, She must have the most tremendous strength of spirit to have endured all this and survive to eventually live a happy and fulfilled life. She did however go from one abusive relationship to another, marrying very young and having children. Later she met and somehow drifted into marriage with Rod who was extremely controlling and ended up almost being killed by him, How she survived that degree of violence and lived to tell the tale is a miracle. I’m so glad that she is now happily married and living a full and rewarding life. She deserves nothing less.
