It is mind-boggling to imagine how anyone could resist the humor and truthfulness in Creech’s poem book. The fact that it is written through the eyes of a young boy who is not a fan of poetry will attract children of a certain when they, too, begin to despise poetry as most do. By telling the boy’s struggle with and understanding of poetry, the child is unlikely to even recognize that what they are reading is poetry and not a story. It is reminiscent of other works like Ellen Hopkins who writes in much the same way but is geared toward young adults. With Creech’s book, she also weaves in references to poems which most children will be familiar with like Frost and Williams and the child readers also ge a bit of a poetry lesson as a bonus.
