Magic Dreams by Ilona Andrews gets 4 1/2 stars. A mesmerizing introduction of an anomalous shapeshifter Dali Harimau (how many weretigers are vegetarians???) as she struggles to deal with her attraction to her alpha, Jim and tries to find out why he is deathly ill. An intriguing melange of cultural beliefs are interspersed with arcane occurrences and the wisecracking Dali gives a highly entertaining tale that makes one want to read more about these characters.

Ice Shards by Yasmine Galenorn: 3 stars. A Finnish house sprite is trying to clear her name of the murder that she was convicted of which destroyed her ability to become the high priestess. Accompanied by three companions, she goes on a quest to either clear her name or confirm her guilt for all time. Difficult to establish sympathy for her and a lot of extraneous characters cause a bit of confusion.

Double Hexed by Allyson James 3 1/2 stars. Stormwalker Janet Begay also has Beneath magic inherited from her mother, a lover who is a dragon, a resident Nightwalker, a powerful witch employee and a magic mirror. What she also has is a hex or two on her hotel that not even the trickster god Coyote of the sheriff with his magic nullifying powers seem to be able to help her negate. Life is never boring but the magic users and/or beings keep popping up.

Blood Debt by Jeanne C. Stein: 3 1/2 stars Anna Strong is a bounty hunter and vampire, gets put on trial for the death of a witch and must defend herself and the mortal non-magical brother of one of her ally witches.
