I came across the Rebus novels toward the end of his career and seem to be reading them in reverse. It is like reading recollections first and then reading the events themselves in a later book. Either way makes for an entertaining read and the sequence of novels is not hurt if read out of order. Nicely crafted, consistent characters, including the character of the city in which Rebus works and drinks. There was a slightly off-putting aspect to the parallel side story of two friends who are rapists. Not just the unpleasantness of their personae but the way that their story was a sidebar to our main characters almost without them being noticed: how easily they could have got away if not for the character flaws which led them to their sexual predatory activities.
