really liked it

Donoghue takes a minor, small detail from Victorian England's history and creates a vibrant, intense life story of a young woman whose life we follow from a heart-breaking loss of all innocence through to the choices and circumstances that lead to her fate. The intensity of Mary's story was at times both gorgeously written and almost too intense for me to read. (I literally got light-headed a couple of times - sensitive readers, beware!) And while there were times I really disliked Mary, to Donoghue's credit, I was interested in Mary and felt I was being given a look beyond the stereotypical tragic, fallen woman into a complicated person.
