Woolf provides a view of reality that is both hauntingly bleak and beautiful. She juxtaposes the short-sightedness of the Ramsay's daily life against the distant and long reach of the lighthouse beam that skims rhythmically over them at night interrupting the darkness. The variableness of human feeling to one another is sharply contrasted against the ever constant stalwart presence of the lighthouse. I'm left feeling a huge sense of isolation, while simultaneously I am in awe of those brief moments of penetrating light.
