really liked it
bookshelves: young-adult, literary

Speak follows Melinda, a quiet girl who is having a hard time adjusting to her new high school setting. Slowly it begins to become clear that something did happen to make her no longer speak, and that the road to recovery isn't an easy one.

Anderson's books always have great voices and Speak is certainly a great example. Melinda feels very real and easy to connect with. While the story isn't the most action packed and it takes more than half the book for things to get going, the voice is enough to carry you from page to page. Rape is never an easy issue to write about, but I think Anderson really hit the nail on the head with this and her writings continue to tell me that I've been missing out on some great YA by only now getting into what she's written.
