I can totally appreciate why this book is hailed as a classic, I really enjoyed the use of language, the character studies and even, in the end, the story. I feel like I'm probably in the wrong period of my life to have really loved it though, it needs time, slow, careful reading which I guess I wasn't prepared to put in right now... I'll definitely come back to it at a future date.
BTW the introduction in this version (which I read after finishing the book on the advice of the authors) was really enlightening and well worth going back to.
