This book gives a detailed account of what life was like for a poor man in the 1930's. If I'm not mistaken the name of the main character is never established, he starts out in Paris living on bread crumbs & wine. After he grows tired of his current lifestyle he moves to England after a friend tells him of a job that is available taking care of a crazy patient. He arrives in London and things did not work out as planned. He finds himself in the same situation, if not worse. Orwell gives a chilling description of London homeless shelters & the perverse culture that went on inside them. Great book, great ending, great read!!
