I don't like this book as well as Year of Wonders, but it is derived from the minor character Jo's father in Little Women. Now, it's not nice for me to say this, but I enjoyed this book more, probably because it is aimed at an adult audience. For those who enjoyed Red Badge of Courage, this is a good Civil War novel without simplistic, one-dimensional solutions. The main character is not that noble, even though he has incredibly liberal views for someone of this time period. Maybe I just don't appreciate pandering to the public.
