Night Watch (Discworld, #29; City Watch, #6)
Hands-down, one of my favorite Discworld books. Sam Vimes discovers he should be careful what he wishes for when, just as he's longing for the good old days of the Night Watch, he finds himself flung back in time to... the good old days. But his presence--and that of the dangerous criminal, Carcer, who was flung back with him--are causing changes to the events he remembers. Now Vimes struggles to change history for the better--without erasing his future. Alongside Pratchett's usual hilarity, we find profound musings on the nature of law, The People, and how they relate. Unusually for a Discworld book, Night Watch also has lots of action, chases, espionage, and fighting (which might be part of the reason I like it so much).
