I picked up this book because it was well recommended on the Karen Chance group, and several members said Atticus was a lot like my beloved Pritkin. Unfortunately, I found the two characters to be nothing alike, and the book not as good as I expected. Nonetheless, it's an enjoyable book that compelled me to read it all one sitting.

A minor but frustrating issue Hounded has is a distinct lack of contractions, leading to slightly stilted conversations. A bigger issue is the seeming invincibility of the main character; despite the supposed limitations of his Druidic magic and the supposed strength of his foes, Atticus uses magic to solve all of his problems as easily as he uses his sword to defeat his enemies. At no point during the book did I actually feel he was in a tight spot. But the biggest issue, for me, at least, was how incredibly modern and human everyone seemed. Ancient gods, 2000-year-old Druids, vampires, werewolves, and even Atticus' pet dog all act just like your next-door-neighbor. This could have been interesting and amusing, but wound up just being awkward.

Still, Hounded is a good book. I read the entire thing in one day because I couldn't put it down, and I will definitely be reading the next one. The world Hearne creates has a lot of potential (even if the gods are pretty unbelievable), and his characters are compelling. I originally gave this book only three stars, but felt obliged to up the rating, since I wanted to read the next one so badly I ran out and bought it when I discovered my library didn't have a copy. Since I almost never do that, Hounded obviously deserved another star. I would recommend this to any fan of the genre.
