This was a fun read of the "regular guy inadvertently finds himself caught up in a larger intrigue including foreign governments and gangsters" type. It read particularly well given that in the book the pope that gets elected jumps in and starts trying to reform and make the church more transparent - more dramatic than the current actual pope, but there's a fun parallel there.

I enjoyed the book more than Dan Brown's book just because the villain was reasonable (I just can't get behind Dan Brown's tendency to make his villains these creep-tastic Evil McEvisons.) and that made the book much more enjoyable. The bad guy had a real motivation for doing what he did and some real reason to be angry and want to cause havoc, instead of just being twisted for the sake of giving the hero an enemy.
