On one hand, the book is written with a distinctive, interesting style. The voice of the narrator feels unique and just the language goes a long way towards defining and fleshing out the main character. Additionally, Woodrell does a very good job of capturing the feel of the folks on the other side of the tracks (literally in some cases) and their struggle to escape their circumstances.

On the other hand, I felt the book didn't reach a strong conclusion. I was left confused by what happened at the end, and why certain other things happened. That may have been the author's intention, but it didn't quite work for me.
