really liked it
bookshelves: historical-biographical

Worth reading again. I much preferred the earlier sections of the book, dealing with Vera's youth and then with the War. It's hard to believe in current times that a young woman could go and serve as a nurse, in great personal danger and in harrowing circumstances, and then be called back by her family because her mother couldn't cope (good servants were impossible to find during the war!) - and she still felt it was her duty to go home.
I found the description of the post-War period and her entry into politics too long and wordy, but this doesn't stop the book from being remarkable.
