really liked it
Read in August, 2011

I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars but am feeling generous today so 4 it is.
I really enjoyed some of the characters, namely Florence and the grandfather. I also thought some of her prose was so evocative, fat dripping down her grandmother's arms like melting lard and mouths like drooping parentheses were some of the ones I remember off the top of my head.

Other parts of the story wrapped a bit too neatly for my taste, like Flo as an adult being called the Roach Lady, diagramming sentences as a teacher and buying a house on Palmyra Street. Also, as a New Orleanian, I'd like to note that you cannot take the streetcar from Palmyra and Carrollton to the Riverbend. Minor detail but still noticeable.

I keep seeing this compared to The Help and To Kill a Mockingbird. I thought it was way better than the first, nowhere near the latter.
