I had high expectations for this book because I have always been a fan of Eloisa James. However, this book falls short for me. The "beast" is a complete rip off of Dr. House from his irascible bedside manner right down to his painful leg injury than causes him to walk with a cane. Linette is completely forgettable. What I have liked about James' past works is that she writes women who are more than beddable barbies. They have friends and ideas and personalities (shocking for the genera I know). But in her Happily Ever After series, which includes A Kiss At Midnight she seems to have lost the ability to create strong women. Perhaps it is because these novels are discrete whereas her past works have been evolving series. Whatever the reason, it's pretty disappointing.
