Lucky, ten years old, lives in Hard Pan, CA with her guardian Brigitte (her father’s ex-wife) who has come from France to take care of Lucky. Among Hard Pan’s other 41 inhabitants are two of Lucky’s friends, Lincoln, whose hobby is tying knots, and 5 yr old Miles who is learning to read, and read’s “Are You My Mother?” aloud at every opportunity. Lucky has discovered that she can sit outside the building where “anonymous” meetings are held, and eavesdrop of the speakers, who are searching for a “higher power.” Lucky needs a higher power too, for she is fearful that Brigitte will abandon her and return to France. Eventually, Lucky runs away, but al ends happily. There is a lot of humor in the book – Lucky’s dog is named H. M. S. Beagle, and the anonymous meetings are held at the Found Object Wind Chime Museum and Visitor Center. There was controversy when this book was awarded the Newbery, because on the first page, Lucky hears someone tell about a rattlesnake who bit a dog on the scrotum and lots of people objected to the word.
