I remember thinking this was "a bit weird" when I read it as a kid. It's still my assessment. Obviously books have changed a lot as far as pacing, plot and language in the last 35 years, but even as a child (when it was maybe 10 years old) it felt old fashioned.

The main character is fifteen. At one point she meets up with lady in her 90s and she manages to sound older than this lady. I thought it was a choice at first, that maybe there was a timey-wimey reason, but there isn't. As it is the old fashioned language and pacing threw me off a bit, and I had a hard time enjoy it from time to time.

With that said, I quite like the plot and the setting. I'd recommend it, with the addition that it's not your average YA book. If it's even YA to begin with. I'm not sure. But yes, 3.5 stars.
