This is a fun adventure story set in a gritty, post-oil world. The main characters are sympathetic (which was a big relief to me, as I had a hard time with the unsympathetic characters in Bacigalupi's Wind-Up Girl). Despite the language and gritty setting, this is definitely a YA novel as things work out (relatively) well, and although nasty occurrences are alluded to and even discussed, there's little actual violence on the page. I'll definitely read the sequel!
