Nigerian coming of age story. Early in the book, for example, Boy is supposed to kill and eagle by bow and arrow as his first rite of passage; adult males create a set-up where a chick is pre-skewered by an arrow that they claim is his in order to check off the ordeal in an environmentally acceptable way-- so they can get on to the drinking part of the ceremony, and leave the boy to consider what just happened.
A novel that shows the difficulty to keeping a balance between the "old ways" and the practicality and coarseness and cynicism of current life.
